William Coates

Age- 19 (started at 18)

Company- Mott MacDonald

Apprenticeship Programme
Civil / Building Services Advanced Technician Apprenticeship

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The amount of technical knowledge I learn throughout each day. The experience of fellow colleagues allows you to learn, pick up new skill sets and a vast amount of knowledge makes it an excellent way into the industry.
What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
I am currently working on the ECML project where we are currently consulting on the closure of its level crossings for Network Rail between Doncaster and Nottinghamshire. This project is a brilliant way for me to understand all of the different aspects to a project as it provides lots of work from different units.

What does a typical day at work involve?
The normal working day normally involves speaking to my line manager first thing to either get or confirm work, this will also include a time period and from then on I am left to manage my own time to complete the work. I will usually report back throughout the day to keep him informed of progress and estimated delivery time.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
Taking in all the knowledge of fellow colleagues. It would be impossible to remember first tike everything you are told from your first day. I am now into my 7th month here at Mott MacDonald and I am still learning industry and technical knowledge every day. It is all about managing what’s important.

What made you choose to do an Advanced Technician Apprenticeship?
I chose to do an apprenticeship because it provides me with ongoing education, technical industry knowledge, access to vast amount of experience in my colleagues and most importantly I am earning all at the same time without anything to pay back at the end.

What are the benefits?
The benefits are the same as above. The ability to earn whilst you learn and gain industry knowledge that you couldn't gain from anywhere else.

What are your future plans?
After I have completed my course I will apply for Technician membership with the ICE and then look to further my education.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Outside of work I love to socialise and keep fit playing rugby for Ilkley rugby Club.
