Apprenticeship Programme
Civil Structural Trainee Technician

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy being surrounded by knowledgeable people who are always happy to help me. I also enjoy the job itself and the tasks involved, both office based and on site. I get to see the projects I am contributing to.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
I work on a lot of projects, helping all the engineers. The main ones include two leisure centres and replacement drainage on castlefields.

What does a typical day at work involve?
I mainly work on AutoCAD updating drawings, making changes to marked up drawings, issuing drawings, uploading/downloading documents onto the internet so others involved can access it (sharepoint). I have also began helping with design work being able to design some steelwork elements, lintels and foundations.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
Managing my workload as I try to help everyone who asks but I can’t always keep up
What made you choose to do an Advanced Technician Apprenticeship?
I chose it because of the advantages which came with it in terms of the balance of education, relevant work and experience. Also knowing that after education I won’t be looking for a job and being unable to get one due to lack of experience.

What are the benefits?
- Earning whilst learning.
- Constantly being surrounded by people who know a lot and are happy to help. Also the ability to put what I have learnt at college into practice. There is also the benefit of working in a focused environment and the experience in the job and office experience.

What are your future plans?
I achieved firsts in my first 2 university units and I plan to maintain that level throughout my course to reflect the help and experience I am getting from being in the office 4 days a week. Long term I am aiming towards chartership. To achieve this I am working hard at uni to be fast tracked onto the BEng course

I enjoy doing sports, mainly horse riding and rowing, both of which I compete in. I regularly compete regionally in horse riding an have done a few national competitions as is similar in rowing. I also enjoy socialising, reading and helping on the livery yard where I keep my horses.
