Civil Engineering Advanced Technician Apprenticeship

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the variation of the different jobs that I work on, and the fact that I can apply the theory that we learn at college to my working environment.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
I am working mainly on the Crossrail developments at Whitechapel.  The project consists of two 8 storey shafts of entirely different shapes underneath the Whitechapel area to provide access and services to the Whitechapel Crossrail Station.  The designs have proved to be very challenging, incorporating large voids in the shafts for the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) to pass through, and a massive array of reinforcement being integrated with the concrete.

What does a typical day at work involve?
Currently on a project such as Whitechapel I am managing carrying out my own CAD Design work on an area of the project, alongside carrying out design work on different aspects of the project for a number of design engineers at a time.  This has helped me a lot with time management and communication skills as well as helping to push me to carry out my work quickly and efficiently.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
The challenges at the minute would be learning the new standards/programs that are being used industry wide as BIM (Building Information Modelling) has been put into effect.  I believe however we are in a brilliant position for this as we; as technician apprentices are relatively new to the industry and have been picking up the new aspects quickly.

What made you choose to do an Advanced Technician Apprenticeship?
I thought that the way of learning that an Apprenticeship offered suited me personally as I was getting tired of full time education, and I thought that University wasn’t for me.  I believe that this factor alongside my desire to earn money were the key reasons for me choosing an Apprenticeship, as I believe that day release courses alongside working provides you with the best of both worlds.

What are the benefits?
The obvious benefits for me over university are that I now have over 3 years valuable work experience in a field that I am interested in and want to work in in the future, as well as having completed 2 Industry recognised courses which were funded by my company.  I feel at this stage having gone to University I would have no idea what I wanted to do coming out of my degree.  I have also felt like one of the team at Tony Gee and Partners from the beginning, being treated like a full time employee with all of the holiday and benefits of full time staff alongside having the freedom to spend 1 day a week out of the office has helped me develop as a Technician and a person.

What are your future plans?
Following finishing a Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment and a Level 4 HNC in Civil Engineering I am looking to carry on studying to the next stage, the Level 5 HND.  I would again carry out this course as day release alongside working 4 days a week.  Following the HND I will make a decision whether I want to become a Graduate Design Engineer or remain an Engineering Technician, as I would only need to carry out a single year at University to have a Bachelors in Civil Engineering. I really think this aspect of the Advanced Technical Apprenticeship is great, as learning to this level provides you with a number of different prospects.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?
Between work and College I find myself able to have a varied social life, managing to travel with friends and fit in rugby and gym between injuries.  An interest in computing has also helped me pick up the CAD and other aspects of work on the job quickly.
