Jiten Patel

Age: 18
Company: Mott MacDonald
Apprenticeship Programme
Civil / Building Services Advanced Technician Apprenticeship

What do you enjoy most about your work?
  • Understanding the drawings that I have contributed to or created.
  • Creating drawings from scratch and being able to explain what I have drawn.
  • The great colleagues that I work with allowing me to feel comfortable in my surrounding.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?
  • Doha
  • HS2
  • Georgia Bridge

What does a typical day at work involve?
Settling in, checking emails then either continuing with previously given mark-ups or receiving new mark-ups on the day.
Working with Graduates and/or Senior Engineers to complete tasks that I do or do not understand.

What do you see as the biggest challenges in your job?
  • Having a full understanding in what is being designed and specific parts of the structure
  • Being able to comprehend all the information that is given to me and understand the reasoning behind certain things.

What made you choose to do an Advanced Technician Apprenticeship?
I had my mind set on working and learning rather than sitting in a room and writing notes as that did not suit my personality. I do have to go College on a weekly basis however this is not as intense and paper heavy compared to going to university or doing a full time College course.

The joy of being around mature adults and being in an environment that suits me as well as being able to earn at the same time is more beneficial in my opinion, compared to university.

What are the benefits?
  • Having the appropriate experience for that field.
  • Having a secure job at the end of the scheme.
  • Being able to earn whilst you study (study being covered by the employer)

What are your future plans?
I have not made any definite plans but my current idea is to either go straight into the university route (part time), which will depend on my College grades. Or I will do a Level 4 HNC course.

What do you enjoy doing outside work?
  • I do not get much time outside of work as I travel from far and my weekends are currently made up of me doing College work.
  • I used to play various sports and do frequent long distance jogs, and do voluntary work I enjoyed contributing towards with close friends.
