Meet the ApprenticesHayden DeightonAge: 19Role: Apprentice Building Services EngineerTeam: LE, London
Hayden joined Troup Bywaters + Anders in 2013, as an apprentice, progressing to Trainee in 2015. Hayden works within one of our London design groups which specialises in appointments for commercial office, and higher education projects.
Why did you decide on an apprenticeship?I chose the apprenticeship route because I didn’t want to go to university knowing that I would have to pay the debt back and only come out with the theory side of work. What interested you about Building Services Engineering?I liked the fact that whenever you start a project it will be a different scenario and in a different location rather than having a job where you do the exact same thing every day and not being able to go to different places. Why TB+A?TB+A are a small company which meant that you would be more involved with the projects and the people would interact a lot more meaning you could make friends rather than colleagues who you just work with Monday – Friday. What’s your favourite thing about working at TB+A?The fact that you aren't treated as though you don’t know anything and are ‘just’ the apprentice. TB+A help you to learn and get you involved with everything they do making it more enjoyable.Top tip for newbie apprentices? When you are asked to do something, whether you comfortable or not, just get on and give it a go because it’s the only way to learn the ways in which a building services engineer works. Biggest challenge?Having to locate distribution boards around two 11 storey buildings. What projects are you currently working on?I’m currently working on the electrical infrastructure refurbishment for Imperial College, London in South Kensington and the demolitions project for Amex house in Brighton for American Express.Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?I would like to have all my qualifications by then and to be working my way up the ladder within the business.Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?I support arsenal. What is your favorite building and why?My favourite building is the emirates stadium because it is home to the club I support.
